The Sage School STEAM Expo 2017
The Sage School's 3rd Annual STEAM Expo: Sustainability
The Expo is the culmination of year-long study by Sage's middle school students in grades 6-8 . Using skills in areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, languages, humanities, and mathematics, students have worked to discover global and local problems, connect with professionals who work to solve these problems, and propose their own solutions. In a nutshell, students are using design, scientific, and engineering processes in order to find a solution to a real sustainability challenge facing communities both here in Foxboro and globally.
The Expo will be held this year at Schneider Electric in Foxboro, a global leader in energy management and automation solutions. Schneider recognizes the importance of supporting STEM/STEAM education at all grade levels to create the workforce needed in the future. The event bring together business partners and Sage students in an exhibition of the students' work and an opportunity to hear the business "pitches" by students who share there prototypes or plans. Guests will be asked to select the most viable projects and give feedback on design. Sage welcomes fellow educators or other businesses looking to partner in STEM/STEAM endeavors.
Grade 6 students are working with the Town of Foxboro and other local businesses to identify sustainability challenges facing the area including farming in a suburban landscape, storm water solutions for Foxboro, potential redesign of the town common to increase pedestrian traffic, bike paths, and connecting open space areas.
Grade 7 & 8 students have chosen a more global reach, focusing on sustainable efforts in Costa Rica based upon the three pillars of sustainability. Students will visit Costa Rica late April. Some projects include:- Biomimicry - redesigning delivery drones to be energy efficient.
- Smart Roads - how to prevent traffic jams by designing a road/rail system.
- Antibacterial fabrics - reducing the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria in hospitals.
- Micro-Apartments - living space to encourage a community space; how to fight the lack of space and the rising cost of living in future cities.
