Dennis M. Hanno was appointed the eighth president of Wheaton College on February 22, 2014 and he was inaugurated on October 17, 2014.
In his first year in office, President Hanno has brought renewed attention to the value of a Wheaton education. In April 2015, he announced the establishment of the Wheaton Edge, which includes a guarantee that all students in the Class of 2019 and beyond will have the opportunity for a funded internship. In addition, he oversaw completion of the college's first comprehensive study of outcomes, which found a 98 percent success rate among members of the Class of 2015 six months after graduation.
President Hanno also has introduced several new programs reflecting his interest in facilitating social change. He established the Wheaton Innovation and Leadership Laboratory (WILL), which offers weeklong workshops on entrepreneurship for high school students in Rwanda. The program involves Wheaton undergraduates and others in delivering the seminars, which he leads. He also established a new summer college program for high school students called Discover@Wheaton, and he co-led a course on innovation and entrepreneurship.
During 2015, President Hanno has led the Wheaton community on a yearlong strategic planning process that is now entering its final stage with a discussion process engaging students, faculty, staff, alumnae/i and parents. The plan is expected to be complete by early in 2016.
President Hanno came to Wheaton from Babson College, where he held several senior leadership positions, including provost, senior vice president and President’s Endowed Professor of Accounting. Previously, he served as the associate dean for Undergraduate Matters in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and on the faculty of Boston College.
A vocal advocate for responsible management education, Hanno serves on the board of the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative, a worldwide network dedicated to developing a next generation of responsible leaders. He also plays an active role in the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) movement, including contributing to several of its annual forums and publications.
President Hanno earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame, his Master of Science degree in accounting from Western New England College, and his Ph.D. in management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
