All are welcome to attend and learn.
Treasurer Steve Grossman: Assuming the office of Treasurer and Receiver General in early 2011, Steve Grossman has overseen the implementation of several key initiatives that capitalize on his vision for a business-oriented and transparent Treasury. He created the Small Business Banking Partnership, a program that encourages increased lending activity to small credit-worthy businesses by depositing Treasury reserve funds of up to $10 million apiece in Massachusetts community banks. Additionally, he advocated for the creation of a new Financial Literacy Trust Fund, which uses privately donated funds to educate targeted populations about savings techniques and approaches, consumer protection measures, and the power of compound interest in long-term financial planning. Grossman has also sought to make openness and transparency a hallmark of his administration, taking steps to put the Commonwealth’s checkbook online and putting scores of contracts out to competitive bid.
Believing that the Massachusetts retirement system should better reflect the views and values of its citizens, Grossman also implemented a proxy voting review process for stock holdings managed by the Pension Reserves Investment Management (PRIM) Board, which he chairs. Through this process, the PRIM Board has greater influence on issues such as executive compensation packages, predatory lending practices, environmentally sound practices, and diversity goals among the publicly traded companies that the pension fund holds, while always seeking superior investment return.
Prior to being elected Treasurer, Grossman spent 35 years as CEO of Grossman Marketing Group in Somerville, a 101-year-old, fourth-generation family business. He grew the company’s revenues eightfold, entering new markets and repositioning the company to meet the challenges of an evolving economy.
Grossman serves as an advisory board member of the Women’s Lunch Place and chairs the advisory board of Cambridge College. He was a founding board member of Massachusetts Institute for a New Commonwealth (MassINC), a former campaign chair of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, and a founding board member of the Lenny Zakim Fund. Grossman has also served as the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee and the Massachusetts Democratic Party. Grossman is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School.
